The Hofstra wrestling team hits the mats for the final time at home Tuesday evening against Army.
The Pride enter the Army match winners of nine of 10 including a 33-11 triumph at Princeton on Saturday to improve to 13-4-1 on the season. Army (7-8) is coming off a 24-9 loss to arch rival Navy this past Saturday.
Tuesday’s match against Army is a makeup from a Jan. 26 contest that was postponed because of snow. It will mark the final home match for Hofstra senior grapplers Lou Ruggirello, Ryan Patrovich and Jeff Rotella.

Hofstra wrestling vs. Rider in-match blog
The 23rd-ranked Hofstra wrestling team will hit the mats with conference rival Rider Wednesday night in a match that could decide the seedlings for next month’s Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championships.
Hofstra (11-4-1, 4-1 in CAA) has won seven of eight matches and is coming off a 39-8 win at Harvard this past Saturday. Rider arrives on Long Island at 8-10 and 2-2 in the CAA.
The Hofstra-Rider match will help decide many of the seedlings in the CAA Championships scheduled for March 4 and 5. Six of the 10 weight classes for Wednesday’s match will feature the number one and two ranked wrestlers going head to head. The headliner bout will be at 174 pounds between number one conference-ranked Ryan Patrovich against number two-ranked

The Hofstra wresting team will have the rare chance to knock off the number one team in the nation when it hits the mats with top-ranked Cornell Saturday afternoon in the Physical Education Building.
Saturday’s match against number-one ranked Cornell (7-1) will be the Hofstra’s first against the nation’s top team since November of 2006 when the Pride knocked off number-one ranked Minnesota at the Northeast Duals. Hofstra (9-3-1, 4-1 in Colonial Athletic Association) comes into Saturday’s bout winners of five dual matches in a row and has six wrestlers in the nation’s top 25 led by fourth ranked Lou Ruggirello at 133 pounds.

Hofstra wrestling vs. North Carolina in-match blog
The Hofstra wrestling team will have its first dual match in nearly a month Saturday against the University of North Carolina (UNC) at the Mack Sports Complex starting at 1 p.m.
In Hofstra’s last dual match on Dec. 8 the Pride defeated Maryland 22-17 at the Physical Education Building. The Pride are coming off a ninth-place finish in the 34-team Southern Scuffle on December 29-30 at the Greensboro Coliseum Special Events Center. Fifth-ranked Lou Ruggirello highlighted Hofstra’s showing in Greensboro with a second place finish at 133 pounds.
Against UNC the Pride will be without Justin Accordino at 149 pounds who is rehabbing an injury and was only able to complete one match at the Southern Scuffle before withdrawing from the tournament after taking a medical default in his second bout. UNC (4-2) also took part in the Southern Scuffle and finished in 16th place.
Hofstra and UNC wrestlers squared off three times during the Southern Scuffle with the Pride winning two of the three matches. The Hofstra victories over UNC included 125-pounder Steve Bonanno defeating Jake Corrill by fall in 4:31 and Ruggirello pinning Brock Livorio in 2:33 at 133 pounds. The one Tar Heel win over the Pride came with Danny Lopes pinning Hofstra sophomore Luke Vaith at 141 pounds in 1:21.

The 18th-ranked Hofstra wrestling team will face Maryland in its home opener on Saturday afternoon Dec. 11 at the Physical Education Building (formerly Physical Fitness Center).
The Pride enters the Maryland match at 2-2-1 in dual matches including wins over Edinboro (26-8) and Lindenwood (35-12) and a tie with Oregon State (19-19) along with losses to Purdue (28-6) and Missouri (19-15). Hofstra is coming off a strong 11th-place finish at the 29th annual Cliff Keen-Las Vegas Invitational last weekend, led by senior Lou Ruggirello, who placed third at 133 pounds in the prestigious tournament. Hofstra has six wrestlers ranked in the top 20 by various ranking agencies.
Maryland enters the Hofstra match at 5-2 with wins over McDaniel (40-3), Johns Hopkins (41-3), West Virginia (27-13), Pennsylvania (25-10) and Northern Iowa (19-16).

Lou Ruggirello draws inspirtation from previous Hofstra wrestling great

When Hofstra wrestling red-shirt senior Lou Ruggirello looks up into the Mack Sports Complex rafters and sees the retired jersey of Nick Gallo he gets an extra reminder of his chief goal for his final season on the Pride mats. Gallo was Hofstra wrestling’s last and only national champion in 1977 and Ruggierello would like nothing better than to match that feat this coming March.
“Every time I think about it makes me want to push that much harder to get it done and join his company,” said Ruggierello, who has gotten to know Gallo in recent years and often terms to the former collegiate national champion for advice.

Hofstra wrestling falls to Missouri; Coach Shifflet hopes win by Bonilla-Bowman inspires team
In the midst of Friday night’s 34-7 loss to 17th ranked Missouri, Hofstra wrestling head coach Tom Shifflet is hoping his team got inspired by a dominant performance put in by one of his senior grapplers. Seventeen-ranked Jonny Bonilla-Bowman picked up one of Hofstra’s two wins on the Mack Sports Complex mats in a convincing fashion 21-10 over Tiger sophomore Patrick Wright, a performance Shifflet wants to see from his other grapplers as the home stretch of the 2009/10 season gets set to take shape.
“He took a top 20 guy and basically broke the kid by the third period where he was able to do whatever he wanted,” said Coach Shifflet of Bonilla-Bowman’s effort Friday night, which turned out to be one of only two Pride wins on the evening. “When these guys sit on the bench and watch him they see what he is doing and they need to follow in his foot steps quite honestly because that is the effort we want out of everybody. With guys showing up like that we’ll be back to where we used to be.”

Injury bug continues to bite Hofstra wrestling in loss to Ohio State
The injury bug that has bitten the Hofstra wrestling team so far in the 2009/10 season continued to wreak havoc during Sunday afternoon’s match against third ranked Ohio State. Three weeks after 125-pound sophomore Steve Bonanno suffered a season-ending arm injury against Lock Haven’s Nick Hyatt, freshman Jamie Franco injured his shoulder during Hofstra’s second match of the day at 133-pounds against the Buckeye’s Ian Paddock.
With Franco losing by a medical default and the Pride forced to forfeit its first match at 125 pound match because of Bonanno’s hampered arm, Ohio State (6-0) jumped out to an early 12-0 lead and rolled from there for a 32-6 win. The loss drops Hofstra to 2-2-3 as it prepares for a busy January that features nine more dual matches.

Hofstra wrestling prepares for challenge on mats in 2009/2010
As the Hofstra wrestling team gets set for its opening match this Sunday against Buffalo at 1 p.m., head coach Tom Shifflet is not just focused on the present but the future of this program that has consistently been ranked in the top 20 for the last decade. With an eye toward the long term growth of Hofstra wrestling and knowing this year features a top heavy group of 133 pound grapplers, Coach Shifflet decided to red-shirt three-time NCAA qualifier Lou Ruggirello in order to enhance his chance of capturing a national title in 2011.
While red-shirting Ruggirello will make for a more challenging 2009/2010 season, giving the Valley Stream Central High School graduate another year to hone his skills in freestyle matches in preparation for a national title run next year will be a positive for the program long-term, according to Shifflet. “We don’t just red-shirt anybody, you want to red-shirt the guys who have the attitude, have the work ethic, guys who are going to take that year and really make a conscious effort to develop themselves,” said Shifflet of Ruggirello, who was 15-1 in dual meets as a junior last season. “We wanted to give to give him the best opportunity to win a national title for himself, for the program, because he’s been a great student-athlete and deserves it.”
The decision to red-shirt Ruggirello has created healthy competition to fill the 133 pound slot between junior Jeff Rotella and freshman Jamie Franco, a 2008 New York State champion from Monroe-Woodbury High School. Many other weight classes are also undetermined and avoiding the injury bug will be paramount for a team already low on depth. Coach Shifflet got a scare in pre-season workouts when 10th ranked 174-pound wrestler Ryan Patrovich sprained a knee ligament forcing him to miss two weeks of practice but the junior who knocked off number one ranked 165-pound wrestler Mack Lewnes of Cornell in last year’s NCAAs, will be ready for the opener.
